Dajana Nalvarte Sociology November 10, 2014 Controversies on Native American Names For many years several schools, sports, companies, things, and mascots have their names named after Native Americans. The Native Americans have been fighting to take their names back after so many years. They feel that it is an offensive expression to use their names on things and want the names to be changed to something else. Then you have the opposing side that say the name is a form of positive respect towards the Native Americans. This becomes a controversy amongst both sides because both have different opinions on what the names stand for. Throughout the United States about 4,600 schools use Native Americans names for their teams and mascot (99; pt.3). These schools use logos of people, animals, and cartoon characters of the Native American to represent their teams (99; pt. 3). For example, Huntley High School in Huntley, III has used a Native American name for their sports team, and mascot for about 70 year (99; pt. 3). Not only is the school recognized for being the Redskins, but they have been using the name Redskins respectfully for all these years (99; pt.3). Even though the school is proud of the name and use it as a positive symbol others say they are degrading and offended the Native Americans (99; pt. 3).
